Travel Need Not Be Far Away

We travel to discover and explore, to expand our borders and experiences.  It is likely that a mere 2-3 hour trip from you is an "undiscovered country" for you.  Travel need not be far away, you don't need airfare or hotel stays to find great adventures, so get out the map and figure out what there is to see.  Ask friends or read up on regional destinations.  For the cost of a tank of gas and food you can find surprising scenic trails, odd little towns full of history, shopping and relaxation.

In July 2017, my wife and I took a day trip to Brown County, Indiana.  It is situated in Southern Indiana about 2 1/2 hours from our home in Lebanon, OH.  A quiet and scenic drive through the countryside and a few small towns and we arrived.  Parking was easy and the small town of Nashville's streets were bustling with visitors.  We milled around the many shops and enjoyed the skilled artisans creations jewelry, weavings, glasswork, woodworking, musical instruments, home decor, leather, candles, paintings, handcrafted furniture and food.  We could have spent another day easily and didn't get to explore the hiking trails and parks but that gives us an excuse to return next year maybe spend the night in a cabin or bed and breakfast.

In 2016, my wife and I traveled 2 hours South of our home to Berea, KY where we visited the Artisan Village, we were able to watch skilled crafters and artists doing what they do, ask questions.  They were eager to share their love of what they do and answer our questions.  We saw jewelers, painters, glassblowers, weavers, luthiers, metal workers, carvers, quilters, woodturners, broom-makers, candymakers and much more.  My favorite experience was an hour we spent with Warren May, talking dulcimer building.  We never met a single person who was not welcoming and the village seems to thrive on it's many co-op's where local artists display and sell their diverse works.  We spent the night in a local hotel and covered more ground the next day.

We continue to explore the areas 2-3 hours from our home mining the region for sites, history and inexpensive adventures.  You are sure to read of more of our roving soon.
