The Gift of Travel

We live in a world where we are free to move all over the world.  This has not always been the case.  The cost of going somewhere Other-Planet exotic can be prohibitive, but you are not limited by lack of available places to go, things to see or ways to get there.  Your modes of travel have never been more plentiful.  Truth is, your biggest obstacle to travel is your own fears and excuses.

In August 2017, I took my wife to the Florida Keys for our 30th Anniversary.  The Big Fun for me was that it was a secret gift.  My wife had no idea of our destination until we checked in at the airport.  Keeping it a secret was hard because I had to do the planning and research by myself, arrange for her to have the time off with her boss, plan our itinerary, packing and finding good deals.  Making decisions alone was not my normal way of operating over our 30+ years together so I stretched myself to make it happen and keep it a secret.

My greatest joy was how she lit up when she discovered our destination.  That made it all the efforts worthwhile.  We flew on Frontier nonstop to Fort Lauderdale and rented a car.  We stayed in Homestead, FL (the hotels on the Keys were considerably more expensive) and made day trips to everything we wanted to see over our stay.  What natural beauty!  I came to love Tiki bars, exploring Key West, and walking barefoot hand in hand on the beach.  Being free to explore was the best, we didn't go in for the tacky touristy stuff, but took in every kind of culinary delight, artistic interest, side street and park we wanted.

We happened to visit 2 weeks before Hurricane Irma struck the Keys, destroying much of the natural beauty that we had just enjoyed
